    4A Charlton Heston Classic:-)
    By CactusJack
Yet another movie I bought 13+ years ago and I'm just now getting around to writing a review so once again my apologies:-(

Released in 1971, it's always fascinating seeing or looking back onto what "abstract thinkers" looked to as possible apocalyptic endings to the world as we know it.......

I've always been a Charlton Heston fan and his portrayal as U.S. Army Col. Robert Neville M.D. was both exciting and entertaining to watch. But admittedly, the film does have it's cheesy moments and becomes predictable. But even with that said, it's a nicely done adaptation of novelist Richard Matheson's book "I am Legend."

The setting and environment are immediately set as we are introduced to a deserted West Coast city (supposedly downtown Los Angeles); watching Dr. Neville enjoying a morning drive through the city streets on his way to a movie in an empty deserted theatre in the middle of the day, cars and storefronts abandoned. As he holds a conversation with himself we come to find out this bleak future has been this way for approximately 3 years!!!

Not to ruin it for those interested in watching it, but just understand it's movies such as these; The Omega Man, The last Man on Earth, The Time Machine, that in my opinion helped to fuel some of the mega box office sellers we've enjoyed for the past 30+ years; Star Wars, Star Trek, World War Z, Tomorrowland, Edge of Tomorrow, The Walking Dead,.......

Our fascination with the future, what it has to hold and how humanity will survive through it or conquer it I believe will ALWAYS be a theme we revisit again and again:-)

Be forewarned; don't expect it to be as graphic and well scripted or CGI-advanced as todays films, but none-the-less an entertaining movie to watch. And, as with many Sci-fi creations, so does this film break boundaries of race, social class, political affiliation, governmental agenda and the boundaries of human survival.

If Sci-Fi is your thing, then this is yet another of those movies you should have in your collection.

THE OMEGA MAN is the 1971 remake of the Last man on earth film with Vincent price
based on the novel I AM LEGEND by Richard matheson
only some of the script from Omega man is based on the Novel

well this 1971 version is similar to the 1964 version for sure
again Biological war/a plague has Decimated Life on Earth
so Charlton Heston plays scientist Robert Neville who tries on a Daily basis to find a cure
and at night he stays at his home to avoid the plague effected zombies who come out to find more Humans
the only few things this 1971 version takes from the novel
it's filmed in Los Angeles this time a futuristic Los Angeles
where is the 1964 version was filmed in a City in Italy to make it look like the Los Angeles
there are scenes where you'll actually see Charlton Heston playing a scientist trying to find a cure
the Plague ridden victims are not vampires there more like blinded zombies

this 1971 version is hell of a Good thriller sci-fi thriller actually with lots of suspense, not much Horror
    Brilliantly Directed by Boris sagal
and Charlton Heston's performance as Robert neville is brilliant no Doubt about it
L.A. looks very terrifying and isolated, not 1 Human insight
Actor Anthony zerbe plays the Head zombie victim again brilliant performance by Anthony zerbe
this 1971 version has the cream of the crop for brilliant Actors & Director
this new blu-ray release of the film is fantastic
the picture quality in High definition widescreen 2:40:1 is excellent not much Grain at all
much much better quality than the DVD release of course
the sound quality has new Master audio 1.0 stereo mix, sadly no 5.1 master audio mix

the special features from the dvd have been carried over to this new blu-ray of the film
one of the extras is an introduction as it says on the back cover
which is more like a 10mins featurette actually
all new recent interviews with some of the Actors from the film & screenwriter Joyce carrington
Actors Eric Laneuville, Paul kosto & Rosalind cash are interviewed
the Actors give their recollections on making the film and their experience working with Charlton Heston
    very quick but interesting 10mins
plus a Vintage Promo of the film from the 70's & Theatrical trailer as usual

i do like both film versions of the novel I AM LEGEND
but i more like this 1971 Charlton heston version better
    it's matter of opinion really
but time for an upgrade for you love this scifi thriller THE OMEGA MAN
and get this new blu-ray version of the film the picture quality is much better than the dvd release for sure
a fantastic new HD transfer with a new master audio stereo mix
plus all the extras from the dvd release have been carried over to
i gave it 5 stars worth the money

Hi, movie lover's, I always enjoy a good disaster end of the world zombie type flick. You know... empty city, I'm the last man on earth... with exceptions of a few other supporting cast members; one of which is a chick that falls for the hero & the rest are a band of misfits --most of them die by zombies or illness-- all of them are always more dumb then you even though they had already built their own community and have made it this far (well at least until you came along). So of course you become their leader and the adventure then begins. Well Omega Man has all this and more. Not to worry movie lover, I won't give away the ending, I'll just give you a short summary of the plot. The movie starts off with my favorite part of all disaster movies the empty city where you can go anywhere, drive any car you can find, or do anything you wish, why? well simply because you're the only guy on earth or city (at least that you know of) with exceptions of the supporting cast I had mentioned and in this case even a band of over dramatic speech giving apocalyptic virus mutated hippies that hate art and books "but like sardines". Oh did I mention they hate you as well. Don't worry the hero has guns, a castle type home, cool 70's clothes, wine, tunes, chess, and bright lights that really bother the white haired night dwelling hippies. This is a film that was done in the early 70's so none of the special effects that we have today blue screen, green screen, etc; therefore, the cleared out city streets in this movie were really cool for the simple reason it was a real city! The movie overall is ok, it starts off fine, hero starts off smart ("a scientist" even) but boy does he do a lot of dumb things as the film goes on! That always bugs me in these type of flicks. I also feel the villains are lame. But even with all that, I still enjoyed it...what's wrong with me? I don't know, it had to be the beginning of the film as the primary reason why I gave it the stars I did. I recommend popping some pop corn and grabbing a cold drink then kick back an check it out for yourself.
